Tate Holland, CEO

Tate Holland is an experienced School Director and Administrator. Mr. Holland has worked in make-up education and cosmetics sales, manufacturing and distribution for the last seventeen years. Along with his school responsibilities, Tate is active in local community affairs. He is a Board Member of CAPPS, the California Association of Private Postsecondary Schools, the Burbank Chamber of Commerce, the Burbank Downtown Business Improvement District, and is a Member of the Measure K Budgetary Oversight Committee for the Newhall School District. Mr. Holland holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from the American University in Washington, DC. Mr. Holland is certified as a School Director in accordance with CEC §94915(b)(3).

Karl Zundel, School Director

Karl Zundel, School Director Karl Zundel, co-founder of Make-Up Designory, is a member of the Make-up Artist and Hairstyling Union Local 798 I.A.T.S.E. A seasoned make-up artist and instructor in all aspects of professional make-up artistry, Mr. Zundel combines real-world experience with over sixteen years teaching all phases of make-up artistry. He has lectured on make-up extensively throughout the United States, Asia and Europe. Mr. Zundel is the instructor for Kryolan Cosmetics’ “International Make-up Artist Seminar,” held in Berlin, Germany, including technical advances in foam latex, foam gelatin, and silicone gel-filled appliance technology. Mr. Zundel is the creator of the video, The Art of Creating Latex Masks, and contributes articles on special make-up effects and lab techniques to Make-up Artist Magazine.

Mr. Zundel’s film and television work includes the co-creation of the very first silicone body-suit, created for Luke Perry in Robin Cook’s Invasion (NBC mini-series), and has worked on such projects as MTV’s reality show Dismissed, SeaQuest DSV (NBC) , Swamp Thing (Universal Studios series), Problem Child 2 (Universal Studios), Pearl (CBS), the live stage shows Beetlejuice’s Graveyard Review and the Halloween Horror Nights (Universal Studios Florida), and The Mickey Mouse Club (Disney), and a variety of advertising and promotional campaigns. Mr. Zundel is certified as a school director in accordance with CEC § 94915(b)(3).

Paul Thompson, Director of Education

Paul Thompson, Director of Education Paul Thompson has been a professional make-up artist for over twenty years, and has taught all phases of make-up artistry at the vocational level for the past thirteen years. Mr. Thompson developed the training program and lesson materials for the Character Make-up department, as well as wrote the manual. In addition to teaching at Make-Up Designory and UCLA Extension, he has lectured all over the world for numerous cosmetic companies such as MAC, Max Factor and Kryolan Cosmetics. His responsibilities include supervision of the school’s daily educational programs. His professional credits include co-creation of the very first silicone body-suit for Luke Perry in Robin Cook’s Invasion (NBC mini-series). He has created numerous make-up effects for commercials, as well as supervised film and television projects for the MUD/FX Group. Mr. Thompson has worked with many celebrities, including Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, James Earl Jones, Jackie Chan, Eric Roberts, Matthew Broderick, Christopher Reeve, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Cheech Marin, Pauly Shore, Tracy Lords, John Dye, George Hamilton, Clint Howard, and Mark Kriski. Mr. Thompson is a licensed instructor in accordance with CEC § 94915(b)(3).

Ronda Rae Althen, Instructor

Ronda Rae Althen has been a professional make-up artist for eleven years, and a licensed cosmetologist for twenty years. Ms. Althen’s television credits include promotions for Everybody Loves Raymond and Frasier, Mr. Show with Bob and David for HBO, and many awards shows for Dick Clark Productions. She has worked extensively in commercials and print, including for SplitEnder, Revostyler, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, Acura, McDonald’s, Los Angeles Magazine and the Universal Studios Hollywood Theme Park. Ms. Althen is a licensed instructor in accordance with CEC § 94915(b)(3).

John Bailey, Instructor

John Bailey has an extensive background as a make-up educator, at both the university and vocational school level. Mr. Bailey began his teaching career in 1973 at Florida State University. He has taught at California State University at Long Beach, and at the vocational level since 1991. In addition, Mr. Bailey has lectured on make-up extensively throughout Europe, in Mexico and Asia. He is responsible for the development and initiation of the beauty education program for Make-up Designory, and supervises the training and performance of all beauty instructors. Mr. Bailey has served as a make-up artist to many celebrities including Edward James Olmos, Bo Derek, Riccardo Montalban, Fred Dryer, and Maria Conchita Alonso. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Theater Arts from Florida State University. Mr. Bailey is a licensed instructor in accordance with CEC §94915(b)(3).



Pamela Hackeman, Instructor

Pamela Hackeman has over fifteen years experience in professional make-up, retail sales and is a licensed esthetician. Ms. Hackeman has worked for the major cosmetics companies MAC Cosmetics, Chanel Cosmetics, La Prairie Cosmetics, Shishiedo Cosmetics and Biotherm Skin Care. She conducted make-up and skin care consultations, as well as staff instruction from platform demonstrations of film and television application. Ms. Hackeman served as a training consultant for National Training Company, developing and conducting training seminars for major corporations like Holiday Inn, See’s Candies, and Sonoma Mission Inn. Her favorite achievement is The International Masters Award in Make-up Artistry at the 1999 International Cosmetology Expo (I.C.E.). Ms. Hackeman’s individual credits include Dark Nova (a fantasy feature film), If You Can’t Rock Me (Brian Seltzer Orchestra music video & theme score for feature film Stuart Little), Spirit Walker (a music video), The Adventures of Stonewall and Reed (Hit n Miss Productions) and The Continuing Adventures of Kid Dynamo (Da Kid Entertainment). She continues to conduct fashion photography and commercial production work in make-up and hair. Pamela has worked with many celebrities, including Beau Bridges, Eric Roberts, Cynthia Watros, David White, Ken Welsh, Chris “Da Kid” Schwartz and Lawrence “L.T.” Taylor. Ms. Hackeman is a licensed instructor in accordance with CEC § 94915(b)(3).

Yvonne Hawker, Instructor

Yvonne Hawker, a professional hairstylist and make-up artist in film, television and print, is a graduate of the Vidal Sassoon Hair Academy in San Francisco, CA, a graduate of Golden West Cosmetology School in Huntington Beach, CA, and a graduate of American Airbrush Academy. Her professional background includes all aspects of make-up artistry and hair styling. Ms. Hawker’s professional credits includes film, (Showtime, Fox Family Channel and Castle Rock) infomercials, music videos, television and print, (Skin & Ink and People). Ms. Hawker has written a Beauty Make-up on-line program for an international cosmetic company as well as articles published on-line for hair styling techniques and the Beauty Make-up textbook currently in use at Make-up Designory. She was the owner and lead stylist of her own hair salon for fifteen years. Her celebrities include: Billy Bob Thorton, Henry Winkler, John Ritter, Estelle Harris, Francis Fisher, Kathleen Helmond, Judith Light, Jerry Stiller, Gary Busey, Lou Rawls, Bill Campbell, Nathan Lane, Chris Leary, Joey Lawrence, Kay Lenz and Ernie Hudson. Ms. Hawker is a licensed instructor in accordance with CEC § 94915(b)(3).


Ashley Jackson, Instructor

Ashley Jackson has been a professional make-up artist for the past eight years. Ms. Jackson’s credits include Made In America (Travel Channel), The Lance Krall Show (Spike), My Atlanta with Jimmy Carter, NASCAR.com, Weather Channel Classroom, her own appearances on WSB-TV, and she was the winner of the 48-Hour Film Festival - Moved. Her music videos include Patty Loveless and Madison Park. Ms. Jackson’s print credits include MAXIM, Playboy, WWD, Las Olas Bride, Perfect Bride and Newsweek. Her celebrity make-ups include Jimmy Carter, Donnie Osmond, George Lopez, Danica McKellar, Warrick Dunn, Billy D. Williams, Lee Greenwood, Outkast, Vern Yip, Killa Mike, and Neal Boortz. Ms. Jackson is a licensed instructor in accordance with CEC § 94915(b)(3).

Juliet Loveland, Instructor

Juliet Loveland has been a professional make-up artist for seventeen years. Ms. Loveland is a member of the Make-up Artists and Hairstylists Union, both Local 706 and Local 798. Her film credits include Mystic River, Blood Work, Planet of the Apes (2001), 100 Women, Devil’s Prey, American Beauty, Halloween H20, The Patriot (Steven Segal), She’s So Lovely and 8 Heads in a Duffle Bag. Her television credits include The Shield, Sharing the Secret, On The Line, 7 Days and Melrose Place. Ms. Loveland’s celebrity make-ups include Dan Akroyd, Dana Ashbrook, Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas, Lucy Liu, Diane Ladd, James Earl Jones, Jenny McCarthy, Robert Estes, Robert Patrick, Kelly Rutherford, Mare Winingham, Kari Wuhrer, Niki Taylor and Julie White. Jacqueline Mgido, Instructor

Jacqueline Mgido is professional hairstylist and make-up artist with extensive experience, having worked in film, television and commercials. Her professional background includes all aspects of make-up artistry and hairstyling for film and television. Ms. Mgido’s credits include work on Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO), Big Pook (Snoop Dog Productions), Fridays (Cartoon Network), Family Style Wardrobe Wars (E!Network), WhoWants tobeaSoapStar? (Soap Network), Another World Reunion (ABC/Triage Productions), Home for the Holidays (CBS/Triage Productions Dinner and A Movie (TBS Productions), as well as commercials for Sony, Budweiser and Office Depot. Gilbert Romero, Instructor

Gilbert Romero is a professional make-up artist and special make-up effects artist with seven years experience. Mr. Romero has extensive experience in film and television. He has worked on such projects as Route 666 with Lou Diamond Phillips, House of 1000 Corpses with Rob Zombie, The Beast 2 for Touchstone Television, JonBenet-The Mystery, for FOX Television, and made the prosthetics for Clint Howard in Girl Fever. In addition, he made prosthetic appliances for Universal Studios’ live-action stunt show WaterWorld, and the Anubus puppets for The Mummy II: Chamber of Horrors; as well as facial appliances for Mortiss and Pauly Shore. Mr. Romero is a licensed instructor in accordance with CEC § 94915(b)(3).

Gina Sandler, Instructor

Gina Sandler has been a professional make-up artist for twelve years. She has worked extensively in commercials, print advertising and editorials. Ms. Sandler’s commercial credits include Canon, Mercedes, EA Sports, Ford, Lincoln, Nike, Taco Bell and Seiko Watches. For print advertising, her clients include Sony, Flexfit, Jaguar, Nikon and Pepsi. Editorial clients include Detour, Glamour, LA Times Magazine, Paper, Shape, Arena, Business 2.0 and Spin. Gina Sandler is a licensed instructor in accordance with CEC § 94915(b)(3).

Mark Shostrom, Instructor

Mark Shostrom is a three-time Emmy award winning make-up artist, with over 25 years of experience. He is a member of Make-up Artists and Hairstylists Union, Local 706. Mr. Shostrom’s film credits include Men in Black, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Dick Tracy, Star Trek: Generations, Devil’s Advocate, The X-Files: Fight the Future, The General’s Daughter, and Videodrome. He has been nominated for four Saturn awards for his work on Evil Dead 2, Phantasm 2, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, and From Beyond. His television credits include American Family, The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek: Voyager, Crossing Jordan, and City of Angels. Mr. Shostrom is a licensed instructor in accordance with CEC § 94915(b)(3).

Mary Anne Toccalino, Instructor

Mary Anne Toccalino has been a professional make-up artist and consultant for the cosmetics industry for twenty years. Since 1997, she has developed a strong background in commercials, industrial video and print, including Chrysler, General Motors, The Detroit Pistons, Merrill Lynch, Audi, K-Mart, Benetton and Domino’s Pizza. Ms. Toccalino’s film and television credits include The Big Story, and the Faith Hill Special for NBC. She has worked for major cosmetics lines including Lancôme, Ralph Lauren, Rene Guinot, Sothy’s, La Prairie, Dermalogica, MOP, Giovanna and Sebastian. She worked in spas and salons, and Ms. Toccalino owned and operated her own business for over nine years. Ms. Toccalino is a licensed instructor in accordance with CEC § 94915(b)(3).

Cyndi Welch, Instructor

Cyndi Welch has been a professional make-up artist for nine years. Ms. Welch’s film credits include CenterStaging, Ripple Effect, American Black Beauty, Believers Among Us, Love Comes to the Executioner and Carbon Copy. Her television credits include The Chicago Story, Time And Again, Mary Christmas, Mom Can I Keep Her and Invisible Mom 2. Ms. Welch’s video credits include Living In Misery with Ashley Lauren Robinson, Caroline with Billy Shehan, and the Ozzy Osbourne interview with Rick Dees. In addition, she has conducted several International Model & Talent Agency Shows, in Los Angeles and New York. Ms. Welch’s celebrity make-ups include Debbie Allen, Daniel Baldwin, Simon Cowell, Minnie Driver, Michael Dudikoff, Omar Epps, Carmen Electra, Bodhi Elfman, Mick Fleetwood, Cynthia Gibb, Robin Givens, Heather Langenkamp, Hugh Laurie, Chris O’Donnell, Burt Reynolds, Connie Sellecca, Raquel Welch, Amy Yasbeck and Earth Wind & Fire. Byrd Holland, Make-up Artist Emeritus

Byrd Holland is a recognized professional make-up artist, and a member of Local 706, the Make-up Artists & Hairstylists Union, IATSE. His career spans 40 years in film, television, theater, and print. Mr. Holland’s film credits include being Department Head for such productions as Executive Action, The Spectre of Edgar Allen Poe, I Crossed the Color Line, Rabid, and Journey to the Center of Time. Mr. Holland’s television credits include The Alamo: Thirteen Days To Glory, Six Against The Rock, Crazy Times, Gunsmoke: Return To Dodge, Crisis In Midair, The Bill Cosby Variety Show, The Rock & Roll Years, American Bandstand, and Department Head for Hard Copy for 4 years. His career includes such celebrities as John Travolta, Danny DeVito, Cloris Leachman, Tom Hanks, Burt Reynolds, Natalie Cole, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Hal Linden, Jonathan Winters, and James Arness. Also included are Jimmy Carter, Sen. and Mrs. Bob Dole, and Gov. Pete Wilson.
